One of the most important elements of eye makeup is mascara. For a long time, mascaras have been available in the liquid form to bring about even application. But the earliest forms of these were available in powder and cake. They were dry and pressed into a container, and the contents were applied by adding a
drop of water. Unlike the recent liquid mascaras that come with a wand, these were applied with the help of a cake mascara brush. A few makeup brands still produce cake mascaras, some of which are organic and a safer alternative to chemical cosmetics.

The specialty of a cake mascara is that it accentuates dark and thick eyelashes more than the liquid kind. They were made at home in ancient times. Some great brands are Longcils Boncza Cosmetique and Isadora. Many companies use herbal ingredients in these mascaras to avoid the harmful effects of chemicals on the eyes.

Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 glass containers
  • 2 small saucepans
  • Beeswax
  • Candelilla wax
  • Carnauba wax
  • Ceteareth-20
  • Cooking thermometer
  • Cyclo-dimethicone
  • Distilled water
  • Glycerin
  • Gum arabic
  • Iron oxide black
  • Mascara containers
  • Paraben-DU
  • Pipette
  • Plastic spoon or spatula
  • Provitamin B5
  • Stearic acid
  • Water
  • Xanthan gum
  • Directions

You will need to first collect all the ingredients and then mix them appropriately. In a glass container filled with 2.4 oz distilled water, add 1/8 teaspoon xanthan gum, 1 teaspoon glycerin, 1 teaspoon gum arabic, and 12 drops of provitamin B5. Mix all the ingredients by stirring the mixture with a plastic spoon. This is "Mixture 1". In a saucepan, add water and keep a glass container in it. Then add the 2 teaspoon stearic acid, ¾ teaspoon ceteareth-20, ¾ teaspoon candelilla wax, 0.2 oz. beeswax, and 0.1 oz. carnauba wax to the container and heat it. Keep the temperature constant at 167 degrees F.

In another bowl, whisk 1½ tablespoon of iron oxide black and ¼ teaspoon cyclo-dimethicone, stir on low heat. This is "Mixture 2". Now take a saucepan and add water, place the container of Mixture 1 and keep on low heat. Then add Mixture 2 gently and maintain a temperature of 158 degrees F. Stir the mixture well for 2 minutes and then remove from heat to let it cool. Add 23 drops of paraben-DU and mix it well. Then pour it in the mascara containers with the help of a pipette, and let it dry.

Organic Cake Mascara

The mascara prepared using chemical ingredients should not be used regularly as it might damage your eyelashes in the long run. However, there are other herbal ingredients which you can use to prepare an organic mascara. The ingredients used are: purified water, beeswax, organic oils of sunflower, rose hip seed, primrose, hydrogenated palm kernel glycerides, organic rose extract in food-grade ethyl alcohol, organic mixed tocopherols, rose wax, food-grade xanthan gum, etc.

Application Tips

You will need a cake mascara brush for application. Dampen the brush. Take a small amount of mascara on the brush, close your eyes, and apply in a downwards direction. Let your lashes dry for a bit, and then open your eyes. You will get lovely dark lashes.

Many makeup professionals prefer using these mascaras as they enhance the eyes and make them more glamorous.
