How many times have you opened a brand new tube of your lipstick and found it split into two parts? Frustrating and heartbreaking, isn't it? Made of waxes and other emollients, lipsticks are prone to breakage, especially when they are kept at the wrong temperature. While you may find it easy to plop your favorite lipstick in your bag and carry it everywhere, when the temperature outside gets too hot, you can end up with a melted lipstick in your bag.
Then there are many people who have those clumsy moments when the 'love of their lives' (I mean the lipstick) just slips and breaks into two parts (you can just feel your heart snap too). As a makeup lover, it can be tragic if you cannot salvage your favorite, and not to forget, extremely expensive lipstick (just imagine if it is one of the limited edition ones, gulp!).
If you have decapitated your favorite lipstick and are now sobbing about the cosmetic catastrophe, then here are some ways in which you can fix a broken lipstick. Try these solutions before throwing out your broken lipsticks.
Step 1: Place the broken lipstick on a clean, working surface. Clean your hands or wear gloves before proceeding. If the lipstick has snapped into two parts, then remove the top portion gently and keep it aside.
Step 2: Stand the lipstick upright, and use a lit match to melt the top portion of the lipstick that remains in the tube. Do not melt the product too much. Once it has a glossy sheen on top, you are ready to attach the top. You can also melt the base of the broken part of the lipstick before attaching it.
Step 3: Use a paper towel to hold the broken part of the lipstick. Quickly and efficiently, reattach the broken tip of the lipstick to the melted top in the tube. Use a lit match around the outer edges while gently smoothing the sides. This gives a seamless finish.
Step 4: Place the lipstick in the refrigerator for twenty to thirty minutes, and allow it to set.
Step 5: Once it has set, give the lipstick a little spin back into the tube. Now, you are all set to use your broken lipstick all over again.
Depotting a lipstick not only helps in salvaging a broken lipstick but also makes the application much easier. This method is the only way to use lipsticks that are broken at the base or into many small pieces. Many professionals who do not have the time and patience to check the names of the lipsticks in similar-looking tubes depot them into small palettes.
One of the benefits of depotting is that you can mix two shades to create a lipstick color that you like. For example, if you are not much into brown lipsticks, then mix it with an unused red lipstick to create a stunning reddish-brown shade.
Things You Need
Step 1: Place the broken parts of the lipstick in the container of your choice.
Step 2: Twist out the remaining part of the lipstick as far up as you can. Using a dull knife, scrape of the remaining lipstick, and place it in the container. If you want to mix two lipstick shades to create a unique color, then scrape out the other lipstick and place it in the container.
Step 3: Use a blow dryer to heat the lipstick in the container, till it melts completely. This might take approximately ten to fifteen minutes. Do not overdo this as you can end up spoiling the lipstick. Once the lipstick has melted, stir it with a spatula. Alternately, you can place the broken part of the lipstick in a spoon and heat it over the candle. Once it has melted, pour it into the container.
Step 4: Keep the lip pot at room temperature till it solidifies. Peel off the sticker of the lipstick, and stick at the base of the container to help you discern the lipstick shade. You can apply the lipstick using a lip brush or with your fingers.
These simple ways can help you use your broken and old lipsticks. So, the next time you accidentally drop your lipstick or snap it while trying to push it into an overstuffed bag, use these simple tricks to get back your favorite shade.
