Makeup Tips for Every Eye Shape

Yes, it is true, your eyes reveal your true nature. But wait! We aren't going down that road. We are concentrating on how to enhance the natural shape of the eye with makeup.

Always remember that, even if your eyes are windows to your soul, no two eyes will ever be the same. While the shape of the eye determines the proper placement of the eye shadow, it is always good to experiment with new styles to find the one that suits you best.

One of the most important factors to take into consideration while working on your eye makeup is that of the shape of your eye. For one, it will enhance the shape of your eye, and two, it will make it visually appealing by making it pop, in the literal sense of the word.

Round Eyes

Neither very prominent nor deep-set, these eye shapes tend to be more oval as compared to elongated eyes. They can either be oval or rounded in shape.

Highlight
Use the highlighter shadow along the brow bone, and the inner corners of your eyes.

Eye Shadow
Use a medium eye shadow to go all over the lid and the crease, leaving the brow bone. Starting from the outer corner of your eye, use a darker shade to contour the crease. Blend the two shades well, ensuring the darker shade stays on the outer corner of your eye.

Eyeliner
Draw a thin line that extends beyond your outer corners; this will help elongate your eyes. Go over your lower lash line with the liner, and let it meet the upper line to form a v-shape. Concentrate your mascara on the outer corner of your eyelashes, curling it towards the outside.

Makeup Tip
Do not apply a dark shade over the center of the eyelid as it will make your eyes look heavier. Avoid applying excess eyeliner and mascara to your lower lash as it will make it look droopy.

Almond Eyes

Narrow and elongated, the corners of this eye slant upwards making it look like an almond. With little or no crease on the lid, it is considered to be one of the best eye shapes to work with.

Highlight
Use the highlighter shadow on the brow bone, the upper lash line, and the inner corner of the lower lash line.

Eye Shadow
Apply a lighter shade of shadow over the outer corner of your eye using inward strokes to reach the moving lid area. Use a darker shade to contour the outer corner of your eyes. Remember to stop halfway across the lid while applying the darker shade. Use the same dark shade to define your lower lash line, working your way in from the outer corner.

Eyeliner
Go over your upper lash line with a super fine line, and draw the corners upwards to form a cat eye or a winged eye. Use white or beige liner along the waterline of your lower lash to make your eyes appear bigger. Use mascara to finish off the look.

Makeup Tip
Avoid thick lines while doing your eyes as it will make your eye look smaller. Use color eyeshadow on the top lid to help open up the eye.

Deep-set Eyes

Set deep into the eye socket, these eye shapes tend to have hidden eyelids. It tends to appear like a more intense eye shape due to the proximity of the eyebrows.

Highlight
Use the highlighter shadow along the natural arch of your eyebrow.

Eye Shadow
Apply a lighter shade of shadow over your entire lid area. Use a medium shade to go slightly above your natural crease line. Starting from the outer corner of your upper lash line, use a darker shade to contour the outer part of your brow bone. Use the same shade to go over the lower lash line starting from the outer corner and tapering it towards the inner corner.

Eyeliner
Use liner to go over your upper lash line, keeping it fine as you move from the inner corner of your lid to the outer corner.

Avoid lining the waterline of your lower lashes as it will end up pushing your eyes deeper, and make it look even smaller.

Protruding Eyes

Protruding or prominent eyes create the appearance of projected lids in the socket area. Although this gives you more lid space to work with, they easily draw attention to the eyes.

Highlight
Highlight the brow bone with a pale shade.

Eye Shadow
Apply a medium shade over the entire lid, sparing your brow bone. You can use the same shade to go over your lower lash line, starting from the outer corner and bringing it towards the inside. Use a darker shade to contour the crease.

Eyeliner
You can afford to go thicker with your eye liner to make your eyes appear smaller. Use mascara only on the upper lashes to complete the look.

Stay away from highlights on the inner rim of the eye, as it will give your eyes a more bulging look.

Close-set Eyes

Simply defined, this eye shape is characterized by being placed closer to the nose ridge. It just means that the space between your eyes is lesser than one-eye width.

Highlight
Use the highlighter shadow on the inner corner of your eyes to make them appear wide.

Eye Shadow
Use shimmery shades to go over your eyelids. Apply darker shades on the outer corner of your eyes to get a smokey look. Blend it well to avoid harsh edges. Use a medium shade to go under your lower lash line, concentrating on the outer third of your lower lid.

Eyeliner
Line both your upper and lower lash line with eyeliner, and ensure they join to form a v-shape at the outer corner. Curl and apply mascara, concentrating it more towards the outer corners of your eye.

Wide-set Eyes

Quite contrary to a close-set eye, a wide-set eye is characterized by more than one-eye width space between the eyes. The least you can do is to use makeup to bring them a little closer than they actually are.

Highlight
Use an eyebrow pencil to tweak the shape of your eyebrows, drawing them closer to the nose ridge if possible. Use a highlighter below the brow bone and direct it towards the center of the eye.

Eye Shadow
Apply a neutral color over the entire eyelid. Use a dark color to shade the inner corner of the lid to create shadow. Ensure you spread the color evenly that goes towards the brow bone.

Eyeliner
Go as close to the lash line as possible while lining both your upper and lower eyelids. Extend the upper line towards the inner corner of your eyes rather than drawing it outwards. Use mascara to draw the lashes towards the center rather than along the outer corner of your eyes.

Remember to go darker on the inner side and lighter on the outer corner of the lids while doing the eyeshadow.

Downturned Eyes

Downturned eyes slant downwards at the outer corner of the eyes, giving your eyes a droopy effect. The main aim is to lift the outer corners of the eye to make it look more appealing.

Highlight
Use a highlighter shadow on the brow bone, the eyelid, and the inner corner of the lower lash line.

Eye Shadow
Apply a medium shade on the outer corner of your lid bringing it in, towards the inner corner of your crease. Go over your lower lid with a mid shade starting a little inside from the outer edge.

Eyeliner
Apply eyeliner along the waterline of your upper lid. Remember to draw the line towards the brow bone to give the corners a raise. Concentrate the mascara along the center of the upper lashes and curl upwards.

Avoid weighing down your lower lashes with mascara. Instead concentrate on creating sexy cat eyes by extending your liner outward and more towards the brow.

Upward Slanting Eyes

Upward slanting eyes or upturned eyes are akin to the coveted almond eyes. The outer corner of the eye has a natural lift, making the lower lid more prominent than the upper lid.

Highlight
Use the highlighter shadow on the brow bone, the inner corner of the lower lash line, and along the lower waterline of your eye if you have small eyes.

Eye Shadow
Sweep the lighter shade all over your lid area. Contour and blend the darker shade into your top and bottom lash line as well as the outer corner and crease line. Blur the shadow lines to create a seamless appearance.

Eyeliner
You can lessen the upward slant by extending the liner straight towards the outer corner. Play up your eye shape by concentrating the mascara towards the center of your eyelashes instead of the corners.

Apply dark shadow or pencil along the outer corner of your lower lid to bring down the lifted effect.

Monolids

Asian eyes have flat surfaces with very little visible crease area. The brow bone too is less defined in Asian eyes, giving it a single lid effect.

Apply liner in a dark shade closer to the lash line, and use darker shadows to further enhance the eye.

Hooded Eyes

Unlike monolids, hooded eyes have an extra layer of skin that droops over the crease giving you little lid space to work with.

Use highlighter to define the inner corner of your eyes, the lower lash line, and along the arch of the brow.

Eye Shadow
Use a light shade to go all over your eyelid. Apply darker shades along the outer corner drawing it towards the crease line to form a v-shape. Blend the colors well, starting from the outer corners and working your way towards the center of the eyelid.

Eyeliner
Starting from the center of your upper eyelid, draw a thin line towards the outer corner of your eye. Remember to tightline the top waterline to intensify your eye shape.

Makeup Tip
Diffuse darker shadow over and past the crease line while doing your hooded eyes to draw the focus upwards and enlarge your eyes.
